Peak Design Travel Backpack 20L Review: The Everyday Bag I Didn’t Know I Needed
For years, I convinced myself that a 30L backpack was the perfect balance between capacity and practicality. It could hold everything I might need—laptop, camera gear, accessories, and all the “just in case” items that inevitably accumulate.
But lately, I’ve realized that carrying more than necessary has become a burden. I wanted a bag that encouraged me to travel lighter without sacrificing functionality.
That’s where the Peak Design Travel Backpack 20L comes in.
Despite its name, this isn’t just a travel backpack. After using it extensively, I’ve found it to be one of the best everyday carry bags I’ve owned.
Compact Yet Surprisingly Spacious

At just 20 liters, the bag is remarkably compact. In fact, it’s one of the smallest backpacks I’ve found that can comfortably accommodate a laptop while still leaving room for daily essentials.
The backpack measures approximately 6 inches deep and can expand to 8.4 inches when additional space is needed. That expandable design is one of its biggest strengths—it stays slim and lightweight most of the time, but provides extra capacity when required.
Thoughtful Organization Without Overcomplication

Unlike Peak Design’s Everyday Backpack, the Travel Backpack 20L takes a minimalist approach to organization.
The main compartment is intentionally simple, featuring:
- A spacious primary storage area
- A stretchy internal organization pocket
- A dedicated laptop and tablet sleeve
The laptop compartment comfortably fits devices up to 16 inches, while the divider can accommodate a tablet up to 10 inches.
A quick-access pocket at the top includes several small dividers, making it easy to store chargers, batteries, cables, and other everyday essentials without needing a separate tech pouch.
For photographers, the interior includes Peak Design’s C-clip attachment points, allowing camera cubes to be securely mounted inside. I was able to fit my preferred camera cube and a tech pouch without issue, while still maintaining a compact profile.
Excellent Travel Companion
One of the most pleasant surprises has been using this backpack as a personal item during flights.
Because of its slim design, it fits comfortably under an airline seat without consuming valuable legroom. Compared to larger travel backpacks, it makes flying significantly more comfortable and less cumbersome.
Premium Build Quality

As expected from Peak Design, the construction quality is outstanding.
The exterior uses fully recycled Versa Shell 400D nylon with excellent weather resistance, while the bottom panel features even more durable 900D weatherproof material.
During several outings in heavy rain, I carried camera equipment inside without concern. The backpack handled wet conditions exceptionally well, keeping everything protected.
The materials feel premium throughout, and small details such as metal hardware, side carry handles, hidden bottle storage, and accessory attachment points reinforce the impression of a thoughtfully designed product.
Comfort and Everyday Use
What stands out most is how comfortable the bag remains throughout a full day of use.
It doesn’t feel bulky, doesn’t encourage overpacking, and remains easy to carry whether you’re commuting, attending events, or heading out for a photography session.
Its understated design also works well in almost any environment. It looks modern and professional without drawing unnecessary attention.
Is It Worth the Price?
At $199, the Travel Backpack 20L isn’t inexpensive.
On paper, that price can seem difficult to justify for a relatively small backpack. Larger travel bags often appear to offer more features for similar money.
However, after months of use, I’ve found that the value comes from how well the bag performs its intended purpose. It delivers a rare combination of compact size, premium materials, excellent comfort, weather protection, and practical organization.
I haven’t found another everyday backpack this size that carries a laptop, camera gear, and essential accessories so effectively while remaining lightweight and comfortable.
Final Verdict
The Peak Design Travel Backpack 20L has become the everyday bag I’ve been searching for all along.
It’s compact, versatile, exceptionally well-built, and encourages a lighter, more intentional approach to carrying gear. Whether you’re a commuter, traveler, photographer, or simply someone looking to downsize from a larger backpack, it’s an easy recommendation.
Bonus: Peak Design Travel Crossbody 3L
Alongside the backpack, Peak Design also introduced the Travel Crossbody 3L.
Essentially a compact Tech Pouch with a shoulder strap, the bag offers the same origami-inspired internal organization in a highly portable format. It features premium metal hardware, a hidden magnetic phone pocket, and weather-resistant recycled Versa Shell fabric.

For those seeking a minimalist sling or everyday essentials bag, the Travel Crossbody is a practical and well-executed option that complements the Travel Backpack perfectly.
